Question by Isabel: How to look for budget 3 month house/villa rental in Italy/Croatia/Sicily?
I’m looking to find a relatively cheap villa/flat/house rental for three months somewhere in the south of Europe, preferably by the sea, while I write up my PhD dissertation, but all I can find are expensive holiday homes. Any ideas on where to look?

Hi Jillian
You don’t say when you want to rent, but if you’re looking at July or August prices will be high because, despite the recession, many people are still travelling to southern Europe for holidays.
If you have a look at these websites :
http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk and
http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk
you’ll find lets all over Europe, rented direct from the owner. Some are doing special prices for long lets so you may find what you’re looking for though they do tend to be holiday homes.

has cheaper accommodation – a room with a view in Florence for 385 euros per month for example – and covers Italy and Spain. This is more a kind of local advertising website with contact direct with the owners again.
There are two other possibilities I can think of if none of these works for you : decide where you’d like to be and contact the local tourist board who often have a list of long-term lets; or contact the local university or college who will know of student type accomodation in the area.
