Q&A: All of volunteer abroad programs cost more than a luxury vacation. Is there a way to do this for less?

Question by chica bonita: All of volunteer abroad programs cost more than a luxury vacation. Is there a way to do this for less?
I want to volunteer in a place like a school or orphanage in need of help. I am going to college to become a teacher, and I love working with kids and doing community service. But all of the programs cost a ton! More than what I would pay if I wanted a first class vacation in these areas. Does anyone offer this service whose sole purpose isn’t to make big bucks?
I want to travel… I figure I might as well help others while doing it.

  2. Yeah, I looked into the Rhoade’s(sp?) scholarship program once. Not only did I need money but I needed a car. Are they kidding? I mean, if I had that kinda money, would I need a scholarship?

  3. Good luck with that! I wanted to volunteer in Guadalajara while I was in college. It was about the cost of a year of my education! Volunteer where you can, nursing homes, hospitals, childrens homes, etc., there’s alot of need when you look. God bless your kind heart. You may want to look into getting a grant…gl

Both are places where you can volunteer overseas. You pay for your trip and souvenirs, volunteer during the day, and stay with a local family who feeds you and provides shelter. Not that expensive. I am having two international exchange students this fall in my home and want to check out these two organizations for the following year so I can go too as I don’t make big bucks. There are different countries you can go to volunteer, from Brazil to Nepal. There are even group events for volunteering, which I think would be fun too! Hope these help.
