We’re building a new home in a subdivision and was wondering if we should hire a private home inspector before doing a final walk-through with the builder? The house will be done in 2 weeks. Anyone with experiences please help. Thank you.

You could, but I wouldn’t. A new home is inspected by building inspectors all the way along, and if they didn’t catch something during construction, it’s unlikely a private inspector is going to catch something after it’s all put together. This final inspection will mostly be for cosmetic items, and you’re the one that needs to be happy there. If they made any substantial mistake it’s probably going to show up in the first year or so of occupancy.

I, on the other hand, would highly recommend it.
A private inspection company would do a much better and thorough job of inspecting all the minor details of your house such as testing each outlet for proper wiring and pressure testing the plumbing.
Building inspectors never do as thorough an inspection.
At least, not in my experience.
Sometimes the city or county inspectors show up for 5 minutes, eat my donuts, drink my coffee, sign off on that phase of construction, and leave for their next inspection.
I mean, I’m not complaining here, but if I were in your shoes, I would spend a few hundred extra dollars for the piece of mind it will bring you.
agree with having it done… he’ll see things that you won’t notice until the ‘new thrill’ wears off and the builder has forgotten your name…. pay the money and have peace of mind…..
